TOP 7 New Upcoming Turn Based Strategy Games of 2022

Some video games are meant to give your brain a workout. Some of them do this literally, like Brain Age, and other games are less obvious about their efforts, like the mind-bending puzzle game Superliminal. However, there is a special part of us that gets a workout when we step into the shoes of a master tactician in the ever-challenging genre of turn-based strategy games. Unforgiving games like XCom will make quick work of you if you make moves carelessly, and an entire race of people can collapse if you make hasty decisions in Civilization. Keep your tactical decision-making strong with the top 7 new upcoming turn-based strategy games of 2022.

  1. Triangle Strategy

First, we have Square Enix’s Triangle Strategy, which is being developed by the same team that brought us turn-based gems like Bravely Default and its sequel, as well as Octopath Traveler, which this game closely resembles. Using the same “HD-2D” textures that made Octopath a visual marvel, Triangle Strategy also features tactical gameplay that will test even the most seasoned strategy game player. Enjoy a gripping story with that branches based on choices you make in conversations with a wide cast of characters from all walks of life. Command your battle-hardened warriors to victory when Triangle Strategy launches exclusively on Nintendo Switch on March 4th, 2022.

  1. Total War: Warhammer III

Combining two franchises that fans of strategy will surely recognize, Total War: Warhammer III is the marriage of Creative Assembly’s long-running medieval strategy game Total War and Games Workshop’s popular Warhammer universe, which started as a tabletop strategy game but has since expanded to cover many genres of video games as well. This third entry to the Total War: Warhammer series is the conclusion to the trilogy and the biggest campaign yet, featuring more races, bigger maps, and more options for battle. Face your daemons when Total War: Warhammer III rides into battle for PC and Game Pass on February 17th, 2022.

  1. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp

Our next game is a remake of Intelligent System’s first two Advance Wars games by the masters of 2D art at WayForward, who are previously known for the Shantae and River City Girls games. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a ground-up reworking of one of the Game Boy Advance’s most highly regarded strategy games. In it, you command a squad of land, sea, and air units for the Orange Star Army alongside commanding officers who each have their own abilities like unit repair and damage boosts. We were initially supposed to have Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp on December 3rd, 2021, but it has since been delayed to Spring 2022. Keep an eye out for it on Nintendo Switch around that time.

  1. Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters

Another game spawned out of Games Workshop’s Warhammer universe is Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters. The major difference here is that this game takes place in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, which is the futuristic counterpart to Warhammer’s medieval fantasy setting. Command the Grey Knights, a coalition with a mysterious origin and devout in their faith as they fight back a humanity-threatening plague: The Bloom. Take Chaos to task with war forged space marines when Warhammer 40K: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters eviscerates its way onto PC in 2022.

  1. Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle was the first entry in an unlikely crossover franchise featuring Nintendo’s very own Italian plumber: Mario, and Ubisoft’s wacky Rabbids from the Rayman series of games. What on the outside seemed like a strange mix that couldn’t possibly work turned out to be one of the best strategy games available on the Nintendo Switch. Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope is the sequel to that first experiment, and it seems like it is going to further expand the universe and XCom-like gameplay presented in the previous game and its DLC, Donkey Kong Adventure. Developed by Ubisoft Milan, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope aims to launch in 2022 with more wacky shenanigans for Nintendo Switch.

  1. Marvel’s Midnight Suns

The next game from the classic turn-based strategy game powerhouse studio Firaxis is Marvel’s Midnight Suns. In a departure from their XCom series, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a tactical turn-based game where abilities are tied to cards that are dealt from a deck at the beginning of each encounter. New abilities can be gained upon developing growing relationships with the characters that make up your team at the base of operations for the game: The Abbey. So draw your cards, make friends with a roster of Marvel heroes, and fight corruption when Marvel’s Midnight Suns saves the world towards the end of 2022 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Series X/S, and PC.

  1. Darkest Dungeon 2

Few games can hope to match the level of stress and dread that the original Darkest Dungeon inspires in those who played it. Managing your team’s sanity in the face of Lovecraftian horrors while they fight for their life in crushingly difficult turn-based battles is an experience that won’t be forgotten anytime soon. Especially since the sequel, aptly named Darkest Dungeon 2 is making its way to masochists everywhere very soon. Featuring a revamped character system, new synergies, and the same sinister art style, Darkest Dungeon 2 is manifesting a worthy sequel to the original game. It is projected to crawl its way onto PCs in its complete form sometime in 2022 but is available in early access right now with nearly two-thirds of the content complete.

Mike has been playing video games since he was able to hold a controller, having been fascinated by Sonic 2 on his mom’s Sega Genesis. That fascination and passion for the art form has grown exponentially nearly 30 years later, and he doesn’t see that fading away anytime soon.
