The isometric RPG has come a long way since its inception. It has grown up from the old days of Final Fantasy Tactics, and the original Fallout game to now include massive games with ponderous stories and thrilling gameplay like Disco Elysium and Hades.

The perspective that an isometric camera gives you is perfect in many ways because you always have a good view of the action without it getting confusing, and it allows developers to always hide what they aren’t ready to reveal to the player yet. Let’s take a look at the isometric goodness on the way soon, with the top 5 isometric RPGs that will consume you in 2022 and 2023.

Endless Dungeon

First, we have Endless Dungeon by Amplitude Studios, who just recently released Humankind, a magnificent 4X turn-based strategy game. Their new game, however, is a roguelite tactical action RPG played from the isometric perspective. You play as shipwrecked heroes in the award-winning Endless Universe, a sci-fi setting known for being equally beautiful and dangerous. Form your squad from a roster of so-called “heroes” (some would use a less-nice word), and board an abandoned space station crawling with monsters. Your job is to protect a crystal, which happens to be a mysterious power source, from these monsters as you move through the vast halls of the abandoned vessel. Go on this mission alone, or team up with your friends to share the burden. Keep the monsters at bay when and protect the crystal when Endless Dungeon lands on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Series X/S, and PC in 2022.

Dark Envoy

Explore a world where humans have fused magic and technology in Dark Envoy by Event Horizon Limited. Enter the world of Jaan in a sci-fi fantasy RPG that stars two siblings: Malakai and Kaela. Play as both of them in single-player mode, or have a friend join you for this rich, non-linear story in co-op mode. Take part in tactical combat that hinges around these two characters and their strengths and weaknesses. Combat is frequent in this world, where humans have gone from being an inferior race to the rulers of the land because of their harnessing the power of magic for their own technology. This table-turning has caused the Orcs and Elves of Jaan to fall from grace and now to seek vengeance.

Customize your characters with four base classes and 16 specializations. In addition to your main and side quests, you can also explore constantly shapeshifting dungeons where the promise of pricey loot might outweigh the reality of being eaten by monsters. Set things right on Jaan when Dark Envoy arrives on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2022.

Path of Exile 2

The sequel to the very popular isometric RPG Path of Exile is being worked on as we speak by the incredible devs at Grinding Gear Games. Path of Exile 2 is expected to contain a new 7 act story campaign, which will be accessible from the currently available Path of Exile client, and will combine with the original campaign and lead into the Atlas endgame. Many mechanical and graphical changes have been discussed, including updated character, item, and environment models and a reworked skill gem system. Pick from 19 new ascendancy classes as you enjoy new music exclusive to Path of Exile 2 by Kamil Orman-Janowski, the fantastic composer responsible for the original game’s music. Weird West

Next, we have an isometric immersive sim being made by WolfEye Studios, a development studio comprised of co-creators of some of the most successful immersive sims to date: Dishonored and Prey. Their new game is Weird West, a dark fantasy western game that features fantastical creatures and atypical heroes and supports many different styles of gameplay due to its simulated sandbox (immersive sim) foundation. The story unfolds through the eyes of several different protagonists, with the final chapter causing all of their paths to converge. The choices you make as each character will influence the next character’s experiences, and everything from characters, the many factions, and even locations will be altered based on your decisions. Get weird when Weird West makes its way to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on March 31st, 2022.

Death Trash

Finally, explore a post-apocalyptic wasteland in Crafting Legends heavily anticipated Isometric RPG Death Trash. This old-school role-playing game features new school mechanics and gameplay. Create your own character and go on a journey in a horror, cyberpunk-inspired open world full of cosmic horrors and handcrafted levels. Fight against the many machines and monsters you encounter, or befriend them. Many of these beings are civil and will entertain a conversation with you without resorting to violence. When you do need to fight, the game features a real-time combat system with both melee and ranged weapons. Other features of this game include pickpocketing, multiple-choice dialogues, a crafting system, and…puking. There’s a button that lets you puke on command. And there’s something called a Puke Bar as well… So grab something to settle your stomach and get ready to dive into the gross world of Death Trash when it launches in 2022.
