The Best Games Like Elden Ring

  1. FromSoftware Games

This one is a bit of a gimme, but it encompasses the true core of what makes Elden Ring so fantastic. FromSoftware, the studio that is responsible for Elden Ring, has been pumping out games of a similar nature for almost a decade. If you haven’t touched one yet, any of the Dark Souls games will take you on a similar journey to that of Elden Ring, with incredible senses of exploration and tough boss fights. There is also Bloodborne, which is a much darker, gothic take on the formula, as well as Sekiro, which is a more stealthy, ninja-based affair. Elden Ring is the latest game from the studio, so if you go back to previous games you will see all of the things they improved on, but they are all worth playing if you haven’t touched them already.

  1. The Surge 2

The Surge series is a Souls-like sci-fi action game. Instead of experience points that activate skills, you will gain access to new augmentations that you can install on your body to give you new abilities. Combat plays in much the same way, where careful consideration and strategy will trump swinging blindly and hoping for the best. The level design in The Surge 2 is almost as complex as the best Dark Souls game, but nowhere near as expansive as Elden Ring.

  1. Nioh 2

Nioh 2 uses Souls-like mechanics to immerse players in a version of ancient Japan that has become overrun with demons. Combat is much faster than Elden Ring but requires just as much consideration to get through the toughest battles. You will die, A LOT. Awesome new powers and a “Devil Trigger”-like system that powers up your warrior with demon energy are some highlights of this sequel, and they make fighting the incredible bosses you’ll face much more palatable.

  1. Code Vein

There was a huge blank spot in the market for an anime-style Souls-like until Code Vein came along. With a suitably dramatic, incomprehensible story and melodramatic characters, Code Vein is the ultimate anime game. Incredible fights, tight combat, and vampiric entities known as Revenants are also present in this game. If you loved Elden Ring’s gameplay and also love anime, Code Vein should be next on your list.

  1. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Combining Star Wars with Dark Souls mechanics was a concept that seemed weird to many people, but once Respawn released Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the video game industry knew this would be the way going forward. As a young Jedi trainee, you will traverse the galaxy in an attempt to return the Jedi Order to its former glory with the help of some new friends. Along the way, you will explore unique planets, unlock awesome force powers, and engage in combat with all kinds of enemies, human, robotic, and creature in nature. Fallen Order even has the equivalent of Dark Souls bonfires or Elden Ring’s Site of Lost Graces.

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

If you just want a singular, massive open world that you can freely explore with no load screens, and you can’t stomach going back to Elden Ring, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the obvious answer. Predating Elden Ring by about 5 years, Breath of the Wild is the blueprint for open-world action RPGs as we know them now. The spirit of exploration and experimentation encouraged by the game’s design has influenced countless games since its release. In fact, Breath of the Wild might be the game where you feel the most at home after Elden Ring. Its world is much more bright and vibrant, but there is still a foreboding sense of danger in many places, and plenty of awesome bosses to fight.

Mike has been playing video games since he was able to hold a controller, having been fascinated by Sonic 2 on his mom’s Sega Genesis. That fascination and passion for the art form has grown exponentially nearly 30 years later, and he doesn’t see that fading away anytime soon.
