West of Loathing: Cheats and Secrets
Getting Gary the Goblin
When you start a new character in West of Loathing and arrive in Boring Springs, there are a few companions you can choose to take with you on your adventure. In this guide, we’ll provide step-by-step instructions on how to get a goblin named Gary as a partner.
When you fall off the turnip cart, the first thing you should do is GO INTO THE BAR. Talk to the hostler, then go into the cellar and grab the alcohol. DO NOT FIGHT THE GOBLIN, OR YOU WILL KILL YOUR SOON-TO-BE FRIEND! You can talk to everyone if you like, but make sure to speak to the bartender about errands and accept the job. You can also find a newspaper for Cactus Bill.
Next, go to the barn, and you can ask the hostler some questions. Talk to him again about his injuries. Also, don’t forget to search the haystacks to find some very useful needles. Return to the bar’s cellar and talk to the goblin. Introduce yourself to Gary. Then, go to the nurse’s house—it’s the one with the boarded-up window. Talk to her, enter, and give her the alcohol. Then, look at the bookshelf and read all the books. You should gain a perk called Goblintongue, which allows you to talk to goblins. You can also use her mirror for free XP.
You can now complete everything else in the prologue (DO NOT TAKE THE HARD HAT). When you leave, you can choose to take Gary (the goblin) with you on your adventure! You can still complete every other quest you would normally do, except for the bartender’s quest and getting the Hard Hat at level 40 of the mine.
Gary is a funny and useful companion who can help you with random encounters and point out all the goblin-related areas on the map. In combat, he can reproduce, summoning weak goblin minions to fight for you, or he can perform a melee attack with low-to-mid damage. If you’re playing this game for the comedy or enjoy trying to talk your way out of battles, Gary is the right partner for you. However, if you’re looking for an advantage during fights, he’s not recommended, as he is quite weak.
