As you explore the ruins of the Star Union, you’ll find that they teem with survivors. The game introduces several distinct NPC factions, where “NPC” stands for “Non-Primary Combatants”:
- Automon: These are robots originally designed for emergency services. With the CORE network down, they’ve evolved autonomous AIs.
- Growth: These are sentient plants that escaped from the biotech firm Terra Tech. They aim to coexist harmoniously with other species, but might be unsettling for those with a fear of tentacles.
- Paragon: Once the ruling elite, they managed to outlive the collapse using life-extending treatments. However, as these therapies begin to fail, their inherited sense of superiority remains intact.
- Psi-fish: Enigmatic levitating aliens that have grown more common since the Star Union’s fall.
- Spacers: These mutants are the evolved urban denizens. Their society and faith have been molded by a past steeped in immersive gaming. Now, in the absence of these virtual networks, they seek adrenaline rushes in the tangible world.
It’s crucial to note that these NPC factions are not mere bystanders as in previous AoW titles. They play a dominant role early in the game, and with their unique and sometimes fierce cultures, they can’t be overlooked.
