Dark and Light – Experience and Leveling System Guide
Just a quick breakdown of how the system works. If you are familiar with ARK, you already know how it functions (it’s a 2-year-old version of ARK).
Player EXP
You gain Player EXP for everything you do: Crafting, killing, and harvesting.
The most Player EXP comes from killing mobs. The higher the level, the better. The higher the “tier” of the mob, the better. For e.g., a LVL 100 sheep will give you more EXP than an LVL 26 one, but still less EXP than an LVL 16 Inferno dragon.
Only the killing blow nets EXP, and there’s no protection against kill stealing.
Passive EXP
Passive EXP is the EXP you get for indirectly doing things. e.g., having a sheep craft fur for you or having a tame kill things while you are nearby.
The most noticeable passive EXP comes from your tribe/house-mates.
A portion of their EXP goes to you (they still receive full EXP) wherever they earn EXP and you’re around. So, it’s a good idea to do things together. e.g., farm a lot of resources first and gather them in your base, then have everyone craft what they need.
Keep in mind that if you craft something in a workstation like a pestle, you will receive EXP regardless of your distance from it. The passive EXP for your mates will still be “donated around” by your character, though, not the pestle.
Skill EXP
Aside from leveling your character, you also need to level your skills, or you won’t be able to craft anything.
Skills come in 3 Trees: Adventuring, Magic, and Architecture.
Do not worry, you will be able to acquire all skills by level 60, and you don’t need to fiddle with skill points. (You won’t be able to learn Dwarven or Human Monar building as an elf and vice versa, though).
You unlock a skill or a new rank of a skill by simply reaching the right player level, e.g., Manor building at LVL 60.
After unlocking a skill or a new rank of a skill, you need to gain skill EXP for it.
The knowledge-meter for that will fill up when you perform certain actions in-game. All actions are listed in the Skill tab on the right side.
Tames will greatly assist in leveling skill EXP. Skill EXP, for e.g., for melee crafting comes from gathering stone, and a tame that can gather stone gives you skill EXP by using it to gather.
