Dominions 6: Battle Formations
Formations, that’s the term for how you arrange your troops in Dominions 6. We’re talking five different styles here, but keep in mind, some are exclusive to those high-flying, top-tier leaders.
Let’s start with the Box Formation. Think of it like making a tight, neat square with your guys. Say you have 36 Infantry of Ulm, each taking up a size 3 spot. In a box, they’d be set up in a 4×3 grid – that’s 12 squares with three units each. Pretty solid for keeping things organized & defending your turf.
Then there’s Line formation. It’s straightforward – literally. Your units line up in a single row → ready to face the enemy head-on. But here’s the catch: only the skilled commanders get to use this tactic…
How about doubling it up? Enter the Double line. It’s pretty much the Line, but with a twist – you add a second row right behind the first. More power, more presence.
Sparse Line Formation? It’s kinda like the Line, but you’re leaving a space between each unit. This doubles the line’s length, but there’s a catch – it hits your squad’s morale with a -1 penalty. And again, this one’s for the commanders who know their stuff.
Skirmish Formation is a different beast… It’s like a checkerboard where each unit square is spaced out. It’s tricky ’cause it also drops your morale by -1, but it can be really effective in the right hands.
Got undisciplined squads? They automatically default to Skirmish and can’t switch it up. Add an unruly unit to a squad, & the whole gang goes undisciplined. But wait, there’s a workaround: Tight Rein ability. This gem lets you control those wild units, opening up other formations & even specific orders.
And for those who hate morale penalties, there’s Skirmisher ability. It cancels out that annoying -1 morale hit when your unit’s in Skirmish or Sparse line.
Last bit: Formation Fighter ability; this one’s a game changer letting you cram more units into a square.
