Dominions 6: How to Recruit Units

So, in Dominions 6, your main task is building up your armies, & you do this by recruiting units in each province you control. As you capture more provinces, your options for recruiting different types of troops expand. If you’re near the coast, you might even snag some amphibious troops – pretty cool, huh??

Here’s the breakdown for each province:

  • Every province has its unique set of units.

  • Some units, the really special ones, can only be recruited in your nation’s capital.

  • Building a fort in a province? That lets you recruit your nation’s non-capital troops right there.

  • To recruit these units, you’ll need gold, resources, & of course, Recruitment points.

Let’s talk about the costs of these units: Each unit comes with its own price in terms of gold, resources, & recruitment points… Gold is basically for training, resources for equipping them, & recruitment points are for getting those elite units in more populated areas. The top-notch units? They’ll hit your gold reserves hard, need a lot of resources, & if they’re both skilled & well-equipped, well, they’re gonna cost you.

Oh, & sacred units, they’re a bit different – they need Holy points, typically just 1 per unit, including the commanders, but the bigger ones may require more.

But keep in mind, there are some limits:

  • Commanders: You can only recruit as many as your points allow in a province each turn, & some might cost more than one point.

  • Gold: Your recruitment is limited by your current treasury. No gold? Then no placing orders for next turn.

  • Resources: Based on what’s available in the province each turn, you can recruit, but you can also queue for future turns. If a unit can’t be built now but is queued, it’ll appear dimmed out.

  • Recruitment Points: Just like with resources, you can queue up units based on the available points.

  • Holy Points: Sacred units can only be recruited up to the Holy limit of your home province, which is tied to your maximum dominion. But you can still add units to the queue beyond this limit.

  • Limited Recruitment: Some units come with a cap, like maybe you can only get 2 of a certain type per turn, no matter how much gold or resources you’re sitting on.

Units are recruited at the start of each turn. If your province is attacked that turn, your new units will jump into defense. Units recruited in a fortress will stay put & might end up in a siege situation.

Once recruited, units go into the unassigned unit pool at the top of the Army Setup screen. Commanders in that province are listed below. A handy tip: Holding [SHIFT] while selecting a unit for recruitment lets you pick ten of that unit at once. Up to 250 units can be queued in a province.
