Dominions 6: Weapon Types
In Dominions 6, melee weapons are kinda split into three types; you’ve got slashing, piercing & blunt. Each of these works differently when it comes to dishing out damage…
Now, most damage calculations follow the standard Damage vs. Protection rule, but here’s a twist with piercing weapons… they sort of cut through the process by reducing the Protection value before the damage calculation even kicks in; quite a game-changer.
Focusing on blunt weapons, think big hammers & maces swinging into action… These heavy hitters do 25% more damage on head hits, & this is before you even consider the Protection value of the target. And for shield-breaking? They’re beasts, inflicting 25% extra damage there.
Slashing weapons – your swords & axes – have their own edge (pun intended)… After Protection gets subtracted, they slash through with an additional 25% damage. And when it comes to shields, they’re even more lethal, dealing 50% more damage. There’s a gruesome detail though… if a slash is strong enough to take out over half of a limb or head’s hit points, well, that part’s getting severed. And if it’s a head, well, it’s pretty much game over for creatures that need their heads to stay alive.
Piercing weapons have this sneaky advantage, reducing Protection by 15% right off the bat… If you stack this with the Armor-Piercing ability, which cuts down Protection by 50%, you’re looking at a 65% reduction in armor; this makes piercing weapons super effective against heavily armored foes…
Two-handed weapons add an impressive 125% of Strength to the damage equation… that’s a lot of extra power especially for those looking to make a big impact on the battlefield.
Now, underwater combat’s a different story… Slashing & blunt weapons are at a disadvantage equal to their length, but piercing weapons? They don’t face this problem. If a weapon can do both piercing & another type of damage, the underwater penalty gets cut in half. Flails, though, get slapped with an extra -1 penalty.
And get this – some weapons can deal multiple types of damage. Take the short sword, for instance: it can do both slashing & piercing damage… each attack has a 50/50 chance of being one or the other but never both at the same time.
Remember we’re not just talking swords & spears here… Creatures like spiders can have attacks that count as piercing damage because of their venomous fangs. And then there are weapons with special effects, like setting your enemy on fire upon contact. When damage is done, you’ll see colored numbers popping up – pale red for normal, dark red for bleeding, green for poison, etc… This helps you gauge the effectiveness of your attacks & strategies.
