Is there a secret code to play on hard mode right from the start?

Yes. On the main menu screen, enter the following sequence (assuming Xbox (DS4) controller):

 

Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, X (Square), Y (Triangle), Back (Share)
