Heroes 3: Ultimate DUNGEON Town Guide
Check out this handy guide to the Dungeon town in Heroes of Might & Magic 3. It doesn’t matter if you’re new to the game or you’ve been playing forever? (you know the game is like 25 years old now…) – this guide will help you get better at using the spooky Dungeon town. We’ll look at all the cool stuff that makes Dungeon different – its creatures heroes special buildings magic school perks, and weak spots…
Meeting the Dungeon Gang
Troglodyte / Infernal Troglodyte
Let’s start with the Troglodytes, the main part of your Dungeon army. These Tier 1 creatures have normal stats but come with some good extras. They can’t be affected by the Blind spell because they don’t have eyes—pretty awesome, huh? When you upgrade them to Infernal Troglodytes, they get a little faster and one more hit point, which is okay but might not be worth the extra money right away.
Quick Tip: When you’re playing a map where being fast matters, pick Shakti, who’s good with Troglodytes. He begins with a big group of Troglodytes and some cool abilities like Offense and Tactics. If you choose him, you can lead a bunch of more than 80 Troglodytes by the second day making up for their okay stats with sheer numbers.
Harpy / Harpy Hag
Next up are the Harpies and Harpy Hags. They’re special because they attack and come back – kind of like boomerangs with sharp claws. Regular Harpies are a bit weak and slow so they’re easy to hit. But if you upgrade them to Harpy Hags, they get faster and enemies can’t hit back. This makes a big difference in fights.
Helpful Hint: If you’re using Harpies to stop enemy shooters, try not to attack them head-on if you can avoid it. In some game changes like Horn of the Abyss, you can choose to attack without going back to where you started. This comes in handy.
Beholder / Evil Eye
Beholders and Evil Eyes pack a punch with their long-range attacks. They’re okay in a tight spot and can handle close combat without breaking a sweat. Evil Eyes get a small boost in stats, but the real advantage is they don’t suffer penalties in melee making them useful in any fight.
Medusa / Medusa Queen
Let’s talk about Medusas and Medusa Queens… These snake-haired sharpshooters are great for teams running short on bullets, thanks to their limited shots. Upgrading to Medusa Queens makes them stronger and more lethal, which is worth it if you have the resources to spare.
Minotaur / Minotaur King
Minotaurs and Minotaur Kings are the way to go for raw power. These creatures have the most damage output among Tier 5 units and keep up good spirits unless they face the Spirit of Oppression artifact. Boosting them to Minotaur Kings to get that extra zip can shake things up.
Manticore / Scorpicore
Manticores and Scorpicores might not be the best in Tier 6, but they’re still worth a look. Scorpicores pack a nasty paralyzing sting making them key players even with lower numbers. The upgrade costs a lot but can freeze enemies for three turns—a big plus.
Red Dragon / Black Dragon
Last but not least, the Red & Black Dragons—they’re the real stars of the Dungeon crew. Upgrading to Black Dragons costs a lot but it’s worth it. They can’t be hurt by big spells and they hit like trucks. You need these guys if you want a good Dungeon army.
Heroes and Mage Guild
Heroes (Overlord / Warlock) Dungeon has two types of heroes you should care about: Overlords and Warlocks. Overlords are great all-around strong heroes, while Warlocks are magic experts but might need help in a fight.
Best Heroes to Look At:
- Gunnar: He’s great at handling supplies on longer trips.
- Shakti: She begins with many Troglodytes giving her a strong start.
- Dace: He’s a smart fighter who likes using Minotaurs.
- Jeddite and Alamar: These guys are experts at bringing units back to life, which can change a battle’s outcome.
Mage Guild: The Dungeon Mage Guild is pretty cool letting you learn spells up to Level 5. It’s your best chance to get Armageddon, but you won’t find spells like Implosion or Fly here. The Mana Vortex makes your spell points twice as powerful, which helps your heroes.
Unique Dungeon Features
Artifact Merchants: You can trade artifacts here, but be careful—prices can get steep.
Mana Vortex: This special item doubles your spell points so pick the right moment to use it.
Portal of Summoning: This changes the game by letting you get more creatures from places you’ve marked.
Neat Tricks to Give a Shot
- Team up Alamar with a top-notch Scholar to spread Resurrection spells all over.
- Send out Black Dragons to cast Armageddon without hurting your own soldiers.
- Get the most out of the Portal of Summoning to grow your army fast.
Dungeon packs a punch if you play it right, but you need to be smart about managing your stuff and planning ahead. It’s not super easy for beginners, but it gives a cool challenge to people who figure out all its tricky parts.
