The best way to stop a spammer is by putting yourself in between the opponent and the ball, and you can do so by dribbling.

You can start the dribble protect technique by pressing the L2/LT button on your controller. You can initiate the move no matter your position. You can be standing sideways or directly in-front of the defender, and still execute the move.

The dribble move restricts your movement severely. But with enough practice, you will learn how to seamlessly transition from a protecting stance to a face-up position.
