TOP 5 Upcoming Marvel Games to Keep an Eye on in 2022 and Beyond
As an entity, Marvel has their fingers in just about every pie imaginable. They dominate the movie landscape with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they obviously run the comic book industry, they have action figures for all of their characters, and of course, Marvel video games tend to be very successful. With their Disney corporate overlords holding the reigns, it doesn’t look like this winning streak will come to a close any time soon, and I’m sure most people are just fine with that. Let’s take a look at what Marvel has in store for us on the video game front with the Top 5 Upcoming Marvel Games to Keep an Eye on in 2022 and Beyond.

Marvels’ Midnight Suns
First up, we have Marvel’s Midnight Suns by Firaxis Games. This tactical role-playing RPG features a huge roster of Marvel heroes, including characters from The Avengers, X-Men, and many more. For the first time ever, you can create your own superhero with “The Hunter”, Marvel’s first-ever customizable hero. The Hunter can be male or female and be outfitted with 40 different powers. Combat takes place in a turn-based fashion similar to Firaxis’ other franchise: XCom.
At the beginning of each mission, you will select 3 heroes to go into battle with The Hunter, and then you will be dealt a hand of random ability cards that you will be able to use throughout the mission. These cards can affect the enemies you face, your own team, or even the surrounding environment, providing tactical advantages. Choose your heroes and head into battle when Marvel’s Midnight Suns lands on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Series X/S, and PC in March 2022.

Marvel’s Avengers DLC
Many new updates are expected for Crystal Dynamics’ constantly evolving game Marvel’s Avengers. At launch, this game was not particularly well-received due to how it handled microtransactions and presented certain aspects of its gameplay, but the core story of the game is very strong, and the team behind the game has been making continuous improvements throughout the game’s lifetime. Several enjoyable campaign expansions have already been released, including the Black Panther adventure War for Wakanda, the Hawkeye time-traveling event Future Imperfect, and the newest expansion, With Great Power which features Spider-Man.
Crystal Dynamics has gone on record stating that their roadmap for content in 2022 should be out early on in the year, so we can expect more news soon. Fans are expecting new stories, new heroes, and new villains to pad out their experience in the new year.

Mysterious Marvel/Skydance Project
Our next project has next to no news surrounding it, only a clinical press release announcing a collaboration between Skydance New Media and Marvel. This announcement acknowledged an agreement between the two parties to begin work on a “completely original story and take on the marvel universe” in what is reportedly going to be a “narrative-driven blockbuster action-adventure game”. My heart sank when I saw that this project will be the first one ever for Skydance’s brand new AAA game studio, but my hopes were raised significantly when I saw that the project was being lead by Amy Hennig.
For those who don’t know who Amy is, she is credited with writing and working on the Uncharted franchise, Jak and Daxter, and for any old heads out there, the incredible Legacy of Kain, which she considers to be her finest work. No other information is available other than what was in the press release, but Amy Hennig’s involvement and the strength of Marvel’s characters gives me hope that this will rival the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man. All we can do now is speculate on who the project will center around…my hope is for DareDevil!

Marvel’s Wolverine
In a surprise trailer, Insomniac Games announced that they are working on a new Marvel game: Marvel’s Wolverine. There’s not much news other than the trailer since it was only early in development when it came out, meaning no release date or even if it will be M-rated, but the quality of the games Insomniac has always put out should make people excited. People involved with the project have gone on record saying that the game is being directed by the creative leads responsible for the fantastic Miles Morales spinoff game and that it “will honor the DNA of the character while putting a fresh take on it”, and feature an “emotional narrative and cutting edge gameplay”. I can’t tell if that “cutting edge” part was a sly joke or not, but I like the cut of this guy’s jib. Marvel’s Wolverine will be exclusive to PlayStation, as Insomniac is a first-party developer.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Finally, the currently most hyped Marvel game release is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, being made by the same team who brought us Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018. This game was announced at the same event as Marvel’s Wolverine and has a similarly low amount of information surrounding it. It is known that you will play as Peter Parker, with Miles Morales co-starring and also being playable. We know that the game will have a mix of new and old suits to unlock and that each suit will have a “symbiote version,” signaling that our heroes might become infected with symbiotes at some point in the story. In the trailer, we hear the voice of Kraven the Hunter as voiced by legendary actor Tony Todd (he’s known for playing Candyman), and we see the visage of Venom, who is expected to be a primary villain. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has a target launch date of 2023 and will release exclusively for PlayStation 5.
