TOP 6 NEW JRPGs Coming 2022 for PS4, PS5, Switch & PC

Colorful characters, epic stories, and deep gameplay mechanics are some of the base offerings of most games in the JRPG genre. A JRPG, as its name suggests, is a role-playing game that was conceptualized and developed in Japan. These games have a very unique style that sets them apart from Western RPGs, and usually carry an instantly recognizable art style. This is why most gamers can, at a glance, tell if a game is an RPG or a JRPG. Nobody who is familiar with video games will confuse a Final Fantasy or Shin Megami Tensei game for a Dragon Age or Elder Scrolls game. For those of us who love a good Japan-flavored adventure, we have a ton of JRPGs to look forward to in 2022. Here are just a few of those games in this list of the Top 6 Upcoming JRPGS of 2022.

  1. Monark

First on this list, we have Monark, a turn-based JRPG with social elements being developed by the FURYU Corporation, and is published by the JRPG factory that is NIS America. Monark is a game that takes great inspiration from the Persona series, and it wears that inspiration on its sleeve. As with every Persona game, Monark takes place in a Japanese high school. This school is suffering from a paranormal mist that makes those who encounter it go mad. Thankfully, your character can traverse both our world and the “Otherworld”, where the mist seems to be coming from. Build a party of allies from characters you meet around the school, and strengthen those relationships to become more powerful in battle. Find the source of the strange mist and save your classmates when Monark releases on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, and PC on February 22nd, 2022.

  1. Babylon’s Fall

Platinum Games is no stranger to awesome action games, and their latest one, Babylon’s Fall, takes that action and injects some JRPG into it. This co-op JRPG puts you in the shoes of a special warrior called a Sentinel. Sentinels must master combat with an array of weapons and abilities in order to climb to the very top of the monster-infested Tower of Babel. Have up to three friends join you on intense missions, But don’t worry about everyone feeling or looking the same. Each Sentinel can customize their appearance and combat specialties while carrying 4 weapons at any time. An additional weapon, the Gideon Coffin, allows for extremely powerful attacks but must be used sparingly. Scale the Tower of Babel and eliminate the evil that hides there when Babylon’s Fall launches for PlayStation 4 and 5, and PC on March 3rd, 2022.

  1. Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin

Like the previous game on this list, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is being developed by a studio that knows how to make awesome action games. Team Ninja, the studio behind Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, and Nioh, is in charge of this reimagining of the original Final Fantasy, and their gritty, dark fantasy rendition is looking pretty awesome. They’re using their action game chops to flip the script on the turn-based battles of the original Final Fantasy, and instead are using a flashy real-time battle system with combos and awesome animations. In Stranger of Paradise, combat boils down to doing damage to an enemy to fill their “Break Gauge”, so you can strike them down with a killing blow that is wonderfully violent and leaves you covered in their blood. Defeat Chaos when Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin releases on March 18th, 2022

For those who don’t know, the Soul Hackers games are a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei series, much like Persona. This turn-based JRPG has many features that fans of Persona will recognize, like a battle system that allows you to unleash a devastating attack on all enemies of you manage to hit all of their weaknesses, and a freely explorable setting outside of combat with many characters to talk to. Spend time with your team members to grow your relationships, as the bonds you forge will make everyone more powerful in battle. 1. Final Fantasy XVI

Square Enix’s legendary but oddly named studio Creative Business Unit III is hard at work on the next Final Fantasy game. Final Fantasy XVI will mark the return of the king of JRPGs, and will take place on the content of Valisthea, a continent embroiled in conflict and disease. The disease, called the Blight, is quickly spreading and causing the six factions that call Valisthea home to take sides and battle each other. Besides this basic setup, not much information is available other than a loose “2022” release date. But, just from the announcement trailer, you can tell it is going to push the PlayStation 5 to the limit in terms of graphical quality.
