The genre of battle royale video games exploded with the launch of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The massive map that slowly contracts to squeeze players into a smaller and smaller area created a tense experience that was as fun to play as it was to watch. Then Fortnite, which started as a construction tower defense game, later adopted this style of play to surpass its predecessor, becoming probably the biggest game on the planet. While Fortnite is what everyone thinks of when you hear “battle royale”, there are many games that have implemented that exciting gameplay. Let’s take a look at some of those games with the top 6 new battle royale games of 2022 and 2023.

Rumbleverse

First, we have the promising new battle royale from the legendary Iron Galaxy Studios: Rumbleverse. In an interesting twist for the genre, Rumbleverse focuses on melee combat rather than gunplay to eliminate other players. Use professional wrestling-themed moves like suplexes and body slams to damage other players until they can no longer fight. Hop into a massive cannon and launch yourself into Grapital City, the diverse map all the action happens on. Up to 40 other battlers will launch in with you, ensuring a huge grappling fight to the bitter end! Squeeze into your singlet and get ready to rumble when Rumbleverse piledrives PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, and PC on February 8th, 2022.

The Cycle: Frontier

Leave the safety of your dropship and step onto the unforgiving planet of Fortuna III in The Cycle: Frontier from YAGER development studio, previously known for making the memorable third-person action game: Spec Ops: The Line. In The Cycle: Frontier, you will gather materials, craft, and fight the native inhabitants of Fortuna III, as well as other players who are fighting for the same materials you need. There is a treasure to be found on this planet, and everybody wants to fill their pockets. Be sure you manage to get some before other players end you or the varying creatures of the planet eat you. Victory can be yours when The Cycle: Frontier drops on PC in 2022.

GRIT

GRIT, a new battle royale being developed by Team GRIT, stands out from the other games currently available by taking place in an unusual setting: the Old West. Mount your horse, grab your posse, and load your six-shooter to fight competing gangs of bandits as they try to collect all the loot on a wide-open map. A mechanic similar to Call of Duty: Warzone’s Gulag exists in the quickdraw mode: win a duel after you fall in battle so you can get right back into the action. A dangerous storm known as the Calamity will slowly take over the map, forcing players to fight each other in an ever-shrinking arena of dusty death. Hold up a train for its loot when GRIT yee-haws onto PC in early 2022.

Shattle

Developer 5 Fortress’s upcoming battle royale Shattle takes place in 1970s Sweden during the Cold War. Up to 25 players spawn in run-down apartments on opposite sides of a large map as the sound of air raid sirens signals the approaching blitzkrieg. Quickly gather weapons and materials, craft what you can, and try to survive as long as you can while bombs fall, destroying buildings and eliminating players. Rounds only last 20 minutes. Do you think you can survive? Should you not make it, you will respawn as a dove that is able to freely traverse the map, making you a valuable asset to your team using in-game voice chat. Find Shelter when Shattle hides on PC in 2022.

Rainy Neon: Baku

Rainy Neon: Baku, a new cyberpunk-themed battle royale by AzDimension features fast-paced sci-fi action in the future version of the actual city of Baku, located in Azerbaijan. The year is 2121, and the most popular event people watch is a death battle between heavily armed cyborgs that represent major corporations. The winners of these battles gain the favor of the people, increasing their bottom line. This capitalist hellscape can accommodate up to 32 fighters in teams of up to two cyborgs. Rain is an actual mechanic, as your cyborg body will become more susceptible to damage when it is wet. Try to stay dry and appease your corporate overlords when Rainy Neon: Baku makes its way to PC in the last part of 2023.

ExoMecha

Our most anticipated battle royale game is the incredible-looking ExoMecha by TwistedRed. This sci-fi battle royale has players begin as cyborgs, fighting other players and collecting materials while piloting vehicles like helicopters and Warthog-like offroad vehicles. Customize your own character based on their skills and class; will you be an aggressive attacker or a more passive support character? The choice is yours, even in the heat of battle. Also customizable is your mech, which must be loaded with a selection of melee weapons like swords and axes as well as guns, along with their tactical abilities.
