TOP 7 Upcoming Tactical Shooters for 2022 and 2023
/The experience of playing a tactical shooter can feel like an ordeal to some. They often allow only a small margin of error before the player character is terminated, and honestly, most of us are used to playing action games where we are basically bullet sponges, able to take a seemingly impossible amount of damage and still continue on. The approach of a tactical shooter is a more humanistic one, where careful planning and technical skill is better than running and gunning every single time. When less than a few bullets can drop you, the more prepared you are for a situation, the better. Keep your tactical brain sharp with this list of the Top 7 Upcoming Tactical Shooters for 2022 and 2023.

Battle Bit Remastered
First on our list is an extremely interesting project being built by MrOkiDoki, BATTLEKOT, and TheLiquidHorse, and it’s called Battle Bit Remastered. As the name would suggest, this game appears to be a remaster of a game that was released in 2017, which was a low-poly fps that combined Minecraft with Call of Duty. This new version manages to have a significant increase in visual quality while maintaining the low-poly aesthetic and also features larger battlefields with vehicles to get around them on. Also new to the remaster is a “nearly” fully destructible environment that is reminiscent of the game Teardown. This very promising tactical shooter is currently available in Steam Early Access and is projected to launch in a complete form sometime in 2022.

Payday 3
The tactical shooting heist game Payday 2 still regularly sits towards the top of the Steam charts despite it being released all the way back in 2013, and hopefully, the wait for a new entry shouldn’t take much longer. Overkill Software is currently developing Payday 3, and at the live stream for the Payday 10th Anniversary, they were able to give us some small tidbits of information. According to the game’s director, Payday 3 will take place in a “living, enormous representation” of New York City. Previous games in the series have taken place in Washington, DC, and Miami. The story is expected to take place after the events of Payday 2 and will feature the characters from that game returning. New targets for heists will reportedly be cryptocurrency, Big Tech companies, and the dark web when Payday 3 launches for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2023.

Six Days in Fallujah
A tactical shooter that has been in and out of development going as far back as 2009 is finally on schedule to come out. Highwire Games’ Six Days in Fallujah has had a tumultuous development, with publishers dropping the project due to its controversial subject matter. The game deals with the recreation of true accounts of both soldiers and civilians during the Second Battle of Fallujah, a notoriously bloody battle and one that was painfully recent at the time of the game’s announcement. This first-person tactical military shooter has you leading a squad of soldiers through true events that are narrated by the real-life soldier you are playing as and employs the use of authentic team tactics such as suppressive fire and breach and clear to overcome impossible situations. The Procedural Architecture system randomly generates each building and individual room to ensure the player never knows fully what they are going into, just like the soldiers they will play as. Six Days in Fallujah is scheduled to release at the end of 2022 for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Series X/S, and PC.

Operation Valor
Experience the tactical shooter genre from a new perspective with One Dawn Studios’ Operation Valor. This game is a top-down, tactical multiplayer shooter that features intense, large-scale engagements. In an interesting twist for the genre, Operation Valor features an exhilarating combination of military shooter action with squad tactics and deep RTS mechanics. The success of you and your team will hinge on your ability to successfully build a forward operating base to launch attacks out of. This base will be your starting point for the 27 versus 27 soldier engagements across large maps, making use of vehicles and long-range weapons. Proper coordination with your squad will be integral to manage resources, build new bases, and successfully win battles. Operation Valor will be available on PC in Q3 2022.

Rainbow 6 Extraction
The de facto heir to the tactical shooter throne is on the way with the sequel/spinoff to Rainbow Six Siege. Rainbow Six Extraction takes the intense, often scary tactical combat and mechanics from the original game and puts a sci-fi spin on them with a constantly mutating alien enemy. Choose from a roster of new and returning operators and play as a member of REACT, a team designed to specifically stop the bio-terror threat created by the alien menace. Suit up and prepare to face an ancient, interstellar threat when Rainbow Six Extraction launches on January 20th, 2022.

Boundary
Engage in tactical multiplayer shooter action in man’s final frontier with Studio Surgical Scalpels’ Boundary. Play as a heavily armed astronaut known as an Astroperator as you navigate fully 3D shootouts in the depths of space. Engagements start in Earth-orbiting space stations and quickly move outside into the inky void, where you will rely on your EMU suit (effectively a jetpack) to twist, turn, accelerate, and do barrel rolls as you pick off enemies. In addition to these zero gravity engagements, you can fully customize your space suit and upgradeable weapons. The enemy can come from any angle when Boundary launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2022.

Ready or Not
The most promising tactical shooter of the near future is VOID Interactive’s Ready or Not, a police tactics game that looks to be the spiritual successor to SWAT 4, the last great game in that particular genre. The developers have gone all-in on making this game as authentic as possible, going as far as to consult with police teams all over the world on their methods. The game takes place in modern-day SWAT scenarios, one of which got the game in some hot water just before release (the game will allegedly have a “school shooter” scenario at some point). An immersive weapon handling and maneuvering system will give players an unrivaled level of control over any situation. Deploy SWAT tactics when Ready or Not busts in a door on PC in 2023, or play it in its unfinished state through Steam Early Access right now.
