Ultimate General: Civil War – Infantry and Artillery
Infantry:
The main body of any army. While there are variations in how large they should be and how many should be in a corps, players should ensure that their army is primarily made up of infantry. They don’t require a lot of micromanagement, can absorb damage, and even rookie brigades can hold positions and deal damage when in good cover. I usually go with four infantry brigades per division of 5, or five infantry brigades in a division of 6.
While there are variations in the size of veteran brigades depending on an individual player’s strategy, generally, players should aim for max-sized rookie brigades of at least 1500, if not 2000-2500. This ensures that some brigades survive to gain veterancy and improve morale and shock resistance. Moreover, larger brigades allow for a larger group of skirmishers to be detached. As for elite brigades, they can stick around at 2000.
Artillery:
Artillery is expensive but useful. It deals extra damage to the enemy, helping a general sway engagements in their favor. Additionally, artillery plays a crucial role in increasing the hitting power of an army on defense and can deal with significant morale shocks during enemy charges.
Place artillery behind the main infantry line, but not directly in it where they might be exposed to fire. Instead, place them behind larger brigades that can absorb damage. Make sure to allow them to fire, though, as it takes a while to get them moving. On the other hand, don’t place them too far back, or they won’t be able to use “Shell shot,” a mid-range ammunition that scatters over a brigade and causes more casualties.
It is typically recommended to have one artillery brigade per division of 5 brigades or one per division of 6 brigades. The number of guns varies, but players should aim for brigades with about 6-7 guns and ensure they use any cannons they may have captured in battles. There’s no need for an artillery brigade with more than 12 guns unless you have extra cannons available in your armory (essentially, the free cannons you captured). Large artillery brigades seem to lower the kill count. They’re useful because they’re more durable and provide more firepower, but their effectiveness is reduced.
