Defensive Techniques – We Who Are About To Die

We Who Are About To Die - Advanced Combat Guide: Offense

Unshielded Defense

• Hold RMB to defend. Your character will automatically defend in the right direction based on an incoming attack.

• Aim your cursor over your enemy, and more specifically, over their weapon. The closer you are the more reliable your block will be.

• The best and most reliable defense is not getting hit at all. Control your distance.

• Albeit worse than shieldbashing, you can kick to knockback enemies.

• Your weapon is a physical object that may interrupt other weapons. For beginners, shields are advised.

Shielded Defense

• Press and hold RMB to hold your shield up.

• While targeting an opponent, cursor movement while blocking enables you to move your shield more precisely.

• Shieldbashing deals no damage but is a good knockback and crowd control. At the cost of shield durability.

Defensive Techniques

• While holding a block you are slowed, so try to time it right.

• Mastering throwing can be a very effective defensive combat technique.

• Focus armor purchases on vulnerable areas. Chestpieces and helmets are more important than leg armor. Shield arms are already protected, and so on.

Each equipment setup has certain advantages and disadvantages, for example:

• Shields: While extremely useful, they can permanently break, slow you down, and are typically fairly expensive.

• Shields: The arena’s public typically will not enjoy a fighter hiding behind their shield too much.

• Light Armor: Gives you huge stamina and speed advantages but leaves you incredibly vulnerable.

• Heavy Armor: Can massively reduce damage but leaves you slow and can significantly affect stamina regeneration.
