WoW Classic – Warlock Skills and Spells to Buy When Leveling
Warlocks are one of the most versatile classes in the game (second only to Druids), which means you’ll encounter many spells and abilities to purchase from trainers or vendors while leveling to 60.
While most abilities are situationally useful, only a handful are absolutely essential. Prioritize upgrading the following spells whenever possible:
(Pro Tip: Warlocks can bypass much of the financial strain other classes face thanks to their cheap Level 40 mount via the Dreadsteed quest. Still, saving gold never hurts!)
Essential Spells & Upgrades
— Corruption: Though it starts with a cast time, Corruption is a core part of your rotation. Once it becomes instant cast, its value skyrockets. Always train this to its highest rank.
— Curse of Agony: While Warlocks have multiple curses, Curse of Agony is your bread-and-butter damage-over-time spell. Keep it at the highest rank to maximize efficiency.
— Siphon Life: A non-negotiable for Affliction Warlocks, this spell heals you while dealing damage. Upgrade it every time—always.
— Shadow Bolt: Not part of the standard Affliction rotation, but it becomes a key filler spell after unlocking the Nightfall talent. Post-Nightfall, keep it upgraded to capitalize on free, high-damage casts.
— Demon Armor: Combined with Siphon Life, Drain Life, Healthstones, and Soulstones, Demon Armor makes squishy cloth-wearing Warlocks surprisingly sturdier. Upgrade it to offset your lack of armor.
— Create Healthstone: Healthstones are lifesavers for you and your party. Due to their cooldown, upgrade this spell (and invest in Demonology talents for a 20% potency boost) to maximize every Healthstone use.
— Create Soulstone: Unlike Shamans, who self-rez, Warlocks can share Soulstones with allies. Upgrade this to revive party members with more health and mana—your healer will thank you.
— Life Tap: Warlocks excel at trading Health for Mana (and vice versa). Life Tap is a core survival tool in every fight, from leveling to raiding. Keep it upgraded to optimize efficiency.
— Drain Soul: This spell generates Soul Shards, which fuel Healthstones, Soulstones, and demon summoning. Upgrade it to farm shards faster, ensuring you’re never caught empty-handed.
Final Notes
Focus on upgrading core spells like Corruption, Curse of Agony, and Siphon Life first. Once Nightfall unlocks, prioritize Shadow Bolt, and don’t neglect defensive tools like Demon Armor and Soulstones. With smart upgrades, your Warlock will dominate both solo and group play!
